Meet Mala

I’m fairly certain my history with reading began around the ripe old age of three, though I don’t remember back that far and can’t rightly prove it. All I know is that I’ve always been a voracious reader, graduating from stacks of children’s books to everything Lois Duncan and Christopher Pike ever wrote to the more “scandalous” novels I used to drop in the gap between my bed and the wall. (I don’t know why I thought my mother wouldn’t figure it out, because of course she did!) Those “scandalous” books have a prominent place on my bookshelves now; I’m an avid reader of romance, and I’m so very proud to be involved in a project that celebrates the genre.

I joined the staff of Soap Opera Weekly magazine in 2004 because of my passion for soap operas, and I have that exact same passion for romance. I remember reading Johanna Lindsey, Iris Johansen, Amanda Quick and Lavyrle Spencer in my early teens. Twenty years later, I feel truly lucky to have expanded my horizons, adding more classic names to my library and gathering new ones as well. Whether it’s Eloisa James and Liz Carlyle, or Courtney Milan and Tessa Dare, romance has so much to offer.

And, okay, going by most of the names I just rattled off, it’s clear that I have a bit of a historical romance focus but, make no mistake, I love a good contemporary or paranormal, too. I’m determined to leave no book unturned! Here at PR, we hope to touch on all of it. (Luckily, I have a massive caffeine addiction to help me power through!)

    Mala,

I work for epublisher Astraea Press and was wondering if you would be taking on new publishers to review for.

    Thanks,
    Alice

      Hi, Alice,

We can receive books, but we cannot guarantee reviews, as we’re just starting out and have a high volume of books in our TBR pile.
      Thanks for your interest!

We are new as well, so I completely understand. Where do we need to send our books to be added to the pile :-)

        Thanks!
        Alice

I wonder what the connection is among reading Lois Duncan, loving soap operas and writing scandalous novels? I had the same experience of reading all of Lois Duncan’s books when I was younger. In fact, I still have them and refuse to get rid of them even though I haven’t read them in years! Now, I love to write soap opera style novels.

Lois Duncan, for me, was one of my first experiences with female-driven suspense…and I think that translates well into soap opera and romance, where we’re invested in women solving not just actual mysteries but the more existential crises of life and love.
